It was a day of love, laughter, memories - and flame - at one Scots primary school which, this week, bid a fond Viking farewell to two of its most-loved companions in a possible world-first.

The primary 3 and 4 class at Papdale Primary School in Kirkwall underwent preparations to give their two goldfish a funeral fit for a god after they lost their lives suddenly.

Bubbles and Freddy had been given to the class as a Christmas gift. Sadly, though, the pair only made it to February before heading off to fish heaven i.e. Valhalla.

The goldfish were set adrift in a special, handcrafted Viking longship before being set alight.

The pair was remembered before the big moment when the children read out their memoirs they had written for their orange pals.

On its blog, the school explained the decision to give Bubbles and Freddy a Viking goodbye: “That very week, we had been learning about the Vikings, their gods, and Valhalla.

“We decided to send our fish to Valhalla with a Viking-style burial in a long ship we made that day.

“We knew the Vikings would only have sent the most beautiful ships to be burned for important people in their communities.”

Teacher, Mrs Corey Eddington, also told SWNS: “The pupils loved the fish and thought they were so fun. They took turns cleaning the water.

“They believed the fish had their own little personalities too. Freddie was greedy and fat - he would always get to the food pellets first.

“Bubbles was shy. She would hide in the plants.

“We were gutted the day they died. It was a really sombre day.”

As the children lined along the water to see Bubbles and Freddy head off to the majestic hall only the bravest of us who have graced the earth get to go to, the boat fell over mid-burn.
