A FUNDRAISING night is to be held in honour of a hero firefighter who sustained life-changing injuries after a wall collapsed as he battled a blaze.

The Fire Brigade Union (FBU) are organising a race night and disco for Watch Commander Andrew Adams which will take place in Port Glasgow Town Hall this Saturday.

The organisation want to help towards a fundraising target of £250,000 to assist with the firefighter, who is also known as Andy, rehabilitation.

The 49-year-old sustained serious injuries as he battled a fire at the former Larkfield Masonic Association club in Greenock's Auchmead Road last August.

The father-of-two is still being treated at Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and his list of injuries included a severed spinal cord which has resulted in complete paraplegia from the chest down.

The FBU hope to raise as much money as possible and have even pledged a donation from The Firefighters 100 lottery fund which was set up to help heroes such as Andy.

Chris McGlone, of The FBU, said: "The FBU is committed through its structures both internally and externally, to supporting Watch Commander Andy Adams

and his family through his rehabilitation period.

"I'm delighted that Andy and his family will be the first recipients in the UK to receive support from the Firefighter 100 lottery fund."

He added: "The Firefighters 100 Lottery is another way in which we can ensure that injured firefighters and their families who need support are looked after.

"Each and every FBU member will know that their colleagues will always stand by them and their families if the worst were to happen. The Fire Brigade family sticks together."

The FBU have also issued an appeal for businesses to donate items for their silent auction and raffle on Saturday.

If you can help e-mail region01@fbu.org.uk or call 07801047614.

Tickets for Saturday's event are £5 and can also be purchased by contacting the FBU.
