Tributes have been paid to an amateur footballer who was found dying in the street in East Kilbride.

Craig Kearney, 24, was discovered at around 2.20am on Sunday in Lochranza Drive.

Paramedics were called to the scene but he died a short time later.

Police said the death is being treated as unexplained and a post mortem examination will be carried out.

As news of his death spread, grieving friends of Craig paid tribute on social media.

Lee Dallas posted: "Waking up to see that cheeky face in the news is just devastating. I just can't believe it's true. Rest in peace Craig Kearney."

Lewis Thomson commented: "RIP wee man. You always had a smile on your face, no matter what GBNF, see you up there mate."

While Stephen O'Neil added: "RIP Craig Kearney wee chap. You were an absolute legend and had a heart of gold, until we meet again."

A force spokeswoman said: "A 24-year-old man was found injured on Lochranza Drive near to Lindsayfield Road, East Kilbride.

"Emergency services attended however he died a short time later.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course to establish the exact cause of death and police are treating the death as unexplained meantime.

"A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."
