KELVINGROVE Park will explode with colour and music this summer when the popular Mela returns.

One of the highlights of summer in the city, the event is Scotland's biggest, free multicultural festival.

It was first held in 1990 as part of the European City of Culture when it was an indoor celebration at the then newly opened Tramway.

It has grown to a massive outdoor event which attracts tens of thousands of visitors and hundreds of artists from all over the world.

This year the Mela will be held in the West End park on Sunday July 2 with headline acts due to be announced later in the year.

As well as the main event, three Mela on Your Doorstep events are being planned in communities across the city.

Soryia Siddique, chairwoman of the Mela steering group, said: "The Glasgow Mela is a glorious celebration of our diversity which is now a much anticipated part of the city's cultural calendar.

"We had a terrific and memorable event last year which attracted some unforgettable performances from artists from across the world and was enjoyed by up to 40,000 people.

"Our ambition is to improve the event and set the bar even higher by delivering a vibrant expression of Glasgow's friendliness and inclusion through art and culture which remains as strong as ever."

Coming from the Sanskrit word to meet, the Mela features a wide range of stalls and food to tempt visitors.
