A GLASGOW gymnastics school is proving to be a breeding ground for gold medallists with their line-up of athletes dominating the Scottish Championships.

City of Glasgow Gymnastics, based in Bellahouston Leisure Centre, scooped 32 gold medals at the Scottish Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Perth.

The club had 32 representatives at the competition and took home a staggering 77 medals overall.

Around 200 members train at the facilities weekly covering four gymnastic disciplines, Men's Artistic, Women's Artistic, Acrobatic and Disability.

Currently there are five boys and five girls working towards qualification for the Commonwealth Games at Rod Smith’s club.

City of Glasgow Gymnastics was the only club based in Scotland to have representatives in the gymnastics category at last year’s Commonwealth Games.

Rod said: “As a club we have a strong team ethos and a group of coaches who have a tremendous amount of expertise and experience.

“They work tirelessly to give the best possible opportunities to the gymnasts and tailor their training programmes to them.”

The club has strong links with the Glasgow Life Performance Sport Programme and a significant number of gymnasts are also pupils at the Glasgow School of Sport.

Crystelle Lake, 12, daughter of former Tennents lager girl June Lake who partner is Rangers legend Derek Johnstone, was amongst the horde of golden gymnasts.

Crystelle won the best over-all performance in the Espoir under 13’s category and impressed with her skills on the vault, bar, beam and floor routine.

Her mum June said her daughter has been doing gymnastics since she was three years old but says she’s come on leaps and bounds since joining the club.

She said: “It’s incredible to see her do well, it’s a sport I loved as a child and to see your own daughter go on and excel in something you’ve watched your whole life is really amazing.”

She added: “Crystelle loves the club and the sport is so disciplined and that’s great for the kids because it spills out in to other areas of their life.

“Gymnastics is so regimented and that helps with her studies and teaches her loads of life skills at the same time.”

Crystelle trains at City Glasgow of Gymnastics five days a week under head coach Rod.
