A MAN was jailed for almost a year after admitting he was addicted to drugs after he was found under the influence behind the wheel.

Wayne Evans was stopped by police on two separate occasions, two years apart, while being under the influence of drugs.

The 34-year-old admitted that he was addicted to GHB, more commonly known as the date rape drug.

The court heard that back in 2014 Evans was found slumped over the wheel of the of a car.

Police officers found him sleeping, unable to stay awake and slurring his words.

The officers then proceeded to carry out a breath test on Evans, from Bellshill, but after testing him no alcohol was detected on his breath.

Glasgow Sheriff Court went on to hear that Evans then voluntarily told officers that he was addicted to GHB and took it every two to three hours.

He said that if he failed to do so it would threaten withdrawal and which would lead to a high risk of him taking seizures.

On the second occasion, Evans was driving at 8.35pm where he was then stopped by police and breathalysed.

Again there was no alcohol in his system but he was seen by officers slurring his words.

Officers then found he was in possession of 0.2 grams of GHB.

Evans admitted that on December 4 2014 on Derby Street near Bentinck Street he was driving while unfit to do so through drink or drugs.

He further admitted on the July 16 on Montrose Street that he drove while unfit to do so through drink or drugs.

At the same place on the same date he also admitted driving without insurance.

He also admitted that on the same date at the same place he drove while disqualified.

He also went on to admit that on the same date at the same place he had methamphetamine in his possession.

Evans defending solicitor said: “He has a severe addiction to drugs.”

Sheriff McCrory sentenced Evans to 10 months in prison and disqualified from driving.
