LEADING candidates in the Glasgow City Council elections will face Evening Times readers in a special hustings event.

Representatives of the five parties currently at the City Chambers will take your questions on the issues that matter to the people of Glasgow.

We want to give the people of the city the opportunity the hear from those seeking your votes and more importantly for you to be able to question them on the future of the services that matter most to you.

We will ask the candidates to explain their vision for key council services including education, social work, social care, the city economy and housing and regeneration.

Current leader of the council, Frank McAveety, representing Labour, will argue it should continue to lead in the city. Susan Aitken, SNP group leader will outline why her party is ready to take the reins.

Martin Bartos, co-group leader of the Greens will put forward the case for having a larger group of Greens on the council. The Conservatives will be represented by Euan Blockley, who is standing as a candidate in Linn. Carole Ford will represent the Liberal Democrats and put her case for making the party a force in Glasgow politics once more.

Our event, supported by City of Glasgow College and Wheatley Group, will be held on April 18 in the City of Glasgow College, 190 Cathedral Street.

Olga Clayton, Wheatley Group Housing Director, said: “We’re delighted to support the Evening Times hustings event. Housing has been transformed in Glasgow over the past few years, but there is still a lot to do if everyone is to have access to a decent, affordable home.

“That’s why we believe housing should be at the top of the agenda for the forthcoming elections. We’re looking forward to hearing the views of all the political parties on how their policies will help create more social housing as well as sustainable communities.”

Graham Shields, Evening Times, editor said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to engage face to face with the men and women who want to be in charge of delivering your services.

“Glasgow is your city and at the Evening Times we want to give you the chance to have your say.”
