An acid attack on two 12-year-old boys has been described as fabricated by police.

Shane Flower and pal Igor had claimed that boys of a similar age in dark clothing had thrown a mystery substance at them which nearly blinded them.

Police conducted extensive enquiries and have now confirmed the pair had lied about the attack after they realised the chemical substance they had been playing with had given them severe injuries.

Police now say that no crime had been committed.

The pair had left Shane's home in the Northfield area of Aberdeen heading towards Igor's place but only a matter of minutes later returned indoors screaming in pain.

Shane was left with severe pain with burns marks all over the right side of his face and close to his eye while Igor was left bleeding from the mouth.

The 12-year-olds were thought to be playing with a chemical substance before they realised the damage it had caused.

Police are still investigating how the boys came into possession of the substance.

Detective Inspector Allen Shaw said: "Extensive inquiries have been carried out today by a team of officers who have established that no assault - nor any crime - has taken place.

"I appreciate the upset this has caused the local community today and would like to thank you all for your patience while our inquiries took place.

"I would also like to thank every member of the public who has provided information in relation to this investigation and thank the media for their assistance so far.

"Further inquiries will now be carried out as to how the substance involved in this incident was able to be accessed and where it came from.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous."
