MEET Glasgow’s Super Six.

The organisers of this year’s Great Women’s Run have unveiled a hit squad of hardy runners who will act as ambassadors for the event, which is taking place on Sunday June 4.

All six have an extra special motivation for taking part in the UK’s only women-only 10k race.

With ten weeks to go, all the runners were given expert training tips by Double Olympian Eilish McColgan to help keep the momentum going.

For Lisa Northcote, 40, from Ayrshire, taking part is a huge milestone after experiencing double personal tragedy and major surgery.

Lisa underwent a hysterectomy and a double mastectomy after discovering she had the BRCA cancer gene.

Both her mum and sister died of cancer in their 40s.

Lisa, who has three children, aged 5,15 and 20, said: “I never thought I would be able to get my fitness level back up after two major operations after discovering I had the BRCA cancer gene.

“But running helps with the symptoms of early menopause.

“I just want everyone to never give up on their goals, look after your health and live every day to its maximum as every moment is precious.

“I’ve lost too many family members to cancer including my mum and sister.

“O want to do under an hour this year.”

Sarah Miller, 26, from Glasgow, suffers from a long-term spinal condition which affects her mobility and is also getting married this year.

She said: “Training to look my best on my big day is fraught with difficulties as I have a long term spinal conditions, which sometimes results in low mobility.

“After a lot of hard work I’m starting to run again and would love to tick off a 10K off my recovery bucket list.

“Although I will never be pain free, exercise allows me the head space to cope with the pain and my new reality.”

The other four ambassadors are; Liz Craig, 57, from Glasgow, Clare Farquhar, 42, from Barrhead, Eilidh Reid, 15, from Stirling and Lorna Stevens, 31, from London.

The 10K route starts at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park and runs through the heart of the city’s west end, passing iconic landmarks such as The Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow University, The Science Centre and The SSE Hydro.

All along the way there will be bands, pipers and dancers and all finishers receive a goody bag, which includes a medal, technical T-shirt and water.

This year, a new 3K route has been added, with a mums and buggies wave.
