A young woman was awoken by police in the fruit and veg aisle of her local Asda in the early hours of this morning - after she sleepwalked 1.5 miles to the store for a watermelon.

The unnamed 23-year-old woman, from Aberdeen, provided a statement to Fubar News, a Facebook page which provides news on the North of Scotland.

Sending “a huge thank you” to the North East Division police officers and Asda staff, she explained: “At around 2:30am last night, I was awoken by a police officer in the fruit and veg aisle of Asda Garthdee.

“Obviously I was very confused, only made worse by the fact that I was barefoot, in my nightdress, and freezing cold.

“Turned out I had sleepwalked the 1.5 miles from my house to Asda, gone for a wander round the outside of Boots and Currys, then gone to Asda to get a watermelon.

“So, thanks to the very kind Asda staff who warmed me up and gave me shoes, socks, and a cup of tea and to the lovely police officers who deposited my very confused self back in bed.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told The Mirror: “We were called to reports of concern for a 23-year-old woman at Asda at Garthdee at about 2.30am today.

“She was assisted home safely.”

Robert Wallace, the deputy store manager at the Asda store, said staff members were “flattered” the woman chose their particular branch in which to do her shopping, something which was a testament to the “relaxing shopping environment” they work hard to create.

“Our colleagues were quick to make sure she was well looked after, and we are glad she got home safely for a good night’s sleep,” he told BBC News.

One Facebook user commented what we all would dread in that situation.

“I usually sleep naked. That would be a really awkward awakening for me.”

“Did you get the melon after all?,” he added.
