THE funeral of a young amateur footballer who tragically died earlier this month after being found injured in the street will take place next week.

Craig Kearney, of Kingston Avenue, Neilston, was found injured in the street on Lochranza Drive in East Kilbride at around 2.20am on Sunday, March 5.

Emergency services attended the scene but the 24-year-old died a short time later.

His family and friends will say goodbye to the popular footballer, who previously played for AFC Bonnyholm in Pollok at St Thomas RC Church in Neilston.

His family placed a notice in the Evening Times describing him as a "dearly loved son of Marie and Barry, adored brother of Molly, loving boyfriend of Olivia and a much loved grandson, nephew and dear friend of many."

A reception and vigil will take place in the church at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

A funeral mass will take place the following day at 10am before Craig is laid to rest at St Conval's Cemetery.

A Crowdfunding page was previously set up to raise funds for the funeral with donations pouring in for Craig.

A 46-year-old man was originally arrested in connection with the death but was released from custody pending further inquiries.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The procurator fiscal received a report concerning a 46-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident in East Kilbride on March 5, 2017.

"After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, he was liberated from custody pending further inquiries and did not appear in court."
