THE family of a hospice worker who died in the place she had worked are honouring her memory by cycling from Clydebank to Donegal.

Hugh Friel’s sister Maureen Deeney worked in St Margaret of Scotland Hospice for 10 years looking after terminally ill patients.

She was diagnosed with cancer last year, stopped working in May and died in the hospice in June.

Hugh said: “The care that all the staff gave Maureen was unbelievable.

“Seeing it first hand for myself I was amazed at what all these special people do, not only for the patients but for their families.

“We have a large family and most of my family come from Donegal, Ireland, and when they were over they were treated second to none: all tea, coffee meals all free and the staff were just so caring to us all at our deepest sad time.”

Hugh has now planned a fundraiser for the hospice - a charity cycle from Clydebank to Kerrykeel, in Donegal.

The devoted brother said he has not been on a bike in 30 years but is determined to raise money for the hospice.

He and a group of friends leave on April 1 and arrive on April 3.

They also plan a dance in Christ the King Hall, Cathcart, on May 5 with an auction.
