ONE of Scotland’s most unique visitor attractions is set to reopen for the summer.

The Glasgow Tower will be open to the public from April 1 for the summer season.

The 127-metre tall structure holds a Guinness World Record and is the only one on earth capable of rotating 360-degrees.

Its glass fronted elevators take visitors to the viewing cabins where they can enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Clyde and beyond.

To reach the top of the tallest fully rotating freestanding structure in the world takes a two and a half minute journey or a 523 step climb.

There will also be an opportunity to learn about the history of Glasgow and the site on which the Tower is built.

Virtual panoramic views can also be seen on iPads using new Geo-located Augmented Reality technology to see all 360 degrees around the viewing platform and zoom into places of interest.

Dr Stephen Breslin, Chief Executive of Glasgow Science Centre, said: “I am thrilled to open the Tower once again to visitors for our summer season.

“The views from the the top are spectacular and give a unique outlook over the city for Glaswegians and visitors to our city alike.

“As a ‘world first’, Glasgow Tower pushes the boundaries of engineering and when you visit, you really appreciate the cutting-edge design and science behind it.”

The attraction, which opened in July 2001, cost £9 million to build and was originally intended for St Enoch Square.

Over its 12 year existence, it has been troubled by malfunctions, including issues with lifts which, on one occasion, left 10 people trapped at height for five hours.

The structure was deemed as ‘flawed’ by Glasgow Science Centre bosses who won compensation from contractors for its failure in 2013.

After securing an undisclosed out-of-court settlement, plans for a workable solution were drawn up by engineers and it was re-opened in 2014 after a £1.8 million re-vamp which included putting in a new set of lifts.

It is hoped that the opening will further boost visitor numbers to Glasgow Science Centre which had its busiest year to date in 2015/2016, welcoming 317, 492 admissions to the Science Mall.

The entire Glasgow Tower visitor experience costs £6.50 per person or Science Mall visitors can add on a visit for £3.50 per person.

The will be open daily from 11am to 4.30pm but will be closed when wind-speeds rise above 25mph.
