FINALISTS in the north east heat of this year’s Glasgow Community Champions Awards are getting ready to raise the roof in Easterhouse.

The winners of the first event will be announced at a fun celebration night tomorrow night (Thursday), hosted by Greater Easterhouse Supporting Hands, The Evening Times awards, supported by our partners Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership, Glasgow Housing Association, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue, celebrate their 10th anniversary this year.

And it looks like 2017 will be kicking off in style.

Evening Times Editor Graham Shields said: “We are all looking forward to the first Glasgow Community Champions event of 2017.

“The standard of entries was extremely high and all our finalists deserve to win. The north east heat is the first of the year, and it’s shaping up to be another excellent celebration of the men, women and children who work hard in their communities to benefit us all.”

As well as showcasing the most inspiring individuals and groups in each corner of the city, the awards have also served as a platform for Scotland’s emerging musical and dramatic talent.

A host of brilliant singers, dancers, actors and speakers have performed at the heats and grand finals over the decade and this Thursday, it will be Lucy Moore’s turn to shine.

The 17-year-old from Bellshill has already had a taste of showbiz success - she came third in the finals of national singing competition TeenStar when she was just 14.

But she is delighted to have the chance to perform in her home city.

“I can’t wait for the Glasgow Community Champions Awards,” she said.

“I volunteer for a local charity for children with disabilities and I know how much hard work is done in our communities by people who want to make a difference.

“I’m really honoured to get the chance to sing at the north east heat.”

Lucy, who is in sixth year at Cardinal Newman High School, was inspired to start singing by her mum Marianne.

“There’s always been singing in our house and I really love it - I hope it will be my career one day,” she added.

The groups and individuals crowned winners on Thursday will go through to the grand final in December.
