YOUNG people who have been in care are invited to take part in a creative writing competition to be judged by Scotland’s national poet.

Makar Jackie Kay is on board to judge the winning poem or story during a special event at the Edinburgh Book Festival on August 15.

The theme for the competition is Random Moments, which involves participants writing 500 words in English or Scots about an unexpected surprise.

Jackie said: “I am very excited to be judging this competition and I’m looking forward to reading the stories and poems that come out of our theme: Random Moments.

“Writing a poem or a story gives you a chance to explore another self.

“We’re hoping to read poems and stories that emerge from this interesting theme. Write a poem or a story in your own voice or the voice of a character.”

CELCIS (the Centre for Excellence for Looked After Children) has teamed up with The Scottish Book Trust, Who Cares? Scotland, the School of Education at Strathclyde University and the Edinburgh International Book Festival to run the competition.

There are two age categories: one for primary aged children; and one for secondary aged young people.

The closing date for the competition is June 15. For more details: www.celcis.org/news/campaigns/get-write
