GLASGOW'S top cop has started an online blog outlining details of his policing week.

Chief Superintendent Brian McInulty, who is one of the highest ranking officers in Police Scotland, published the blog on Friday.

In his first post, the divisional commander for Greater Glasgow said: "This is the first time I have written a blog. To be honest, I never really knew what a blog was until relatively recently."

In the first post, he spoke about the Greater Glasgow Police Division's new recruits and the Westminster attack.

He said: "The events that followed on Wednesday afternoon in Westminster were shocking! My heart goes out to all who have been affected by these terrible acts. I was extremely proud of the way in which local communities across the United Kingdom reacted.

"I was on foot patrol on Thursday in Glasgow City Centre with one of our Inspectors. He is due to retire from the police service later this year. I was very proud to walk the beat with him. We both commented that “this is what we joined for”. Being out and about, away from the desk, away from meetings and interacting with people is what policing is all about.

"The reaction of the people of Glasgow to the attack in London was simply humbling. One elderly gent simply shouted over to us, “thanks for protecting us”. I looked at Inspector Bob and we simply smiled. It was heart warming. It wasn’t all complimentary, in true Glasgow style the wee guy dressed up as the Duke of Wellington statue shouted some friendly banter our way. That made us smile too."

Chief Superintendent McInulty also spoke about his son who is in the force.

He said: "Today my second eldest son went on patrol for the first time on the streets of Edinburgh. He was buzzing when I spoke to him earlier this evening. I was and am extremely proud of him, as I am of my other three sons. I am very lucky and proud to have a great family. It is sad that it often takes a tragedy to remind me of how lucky I am, I suspect it is the same for many of us."

Recently, Chief Superintendent McInulty also joined Twitter alongside officers of the same ranking across the whole of Scotland.
