I think that any fair-minded individual would surmise that Aberdeen are currently a far better football team than Rangers.

I don’t say that to try and rub people up the wrong way, and in fact, I think most Rangers fans would accept that statement as fact given the way the season has gone.

Derek McInnes’s side sit 12 points clear of the Ibrox team in second place, and really that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise at this stage.

Rangers are clearly still a work in progress, and perhaps given time and the proper backing, Pedro Caixinha can get Rangers back to somewhere near the level at least that their fans had become accustomed to over the years.

But that time is not now, and I would expect the Dons to underline their superiority in tomorrow’s match between the two teams.

Of course, anything can happen in a one-off game, so I’m not writing Rangers off completely, but logic would tell you that Aberdeen are clear favourites to win the match.

The Rangers players are clearly still coming to terms with what their new manager wants from them, and he too is still assessing what his best line-up will be.

And they don’t have their troubles to seek at the back either with young Myles Beerman and David Bates being pressed into action in the goalless draw at Kilmarnock on Wednesday night.

They did ok, but it will be a much sterner test if they have to face the likes of Niall McGinn, Jonny Hayes and Adam Rooney.

Aberdeen have no such selection worries or concerns over form, and their performance up at Dundee last Friday night was absolutely sensational.

Yes, Dundee’s defending was someway short of abysmal, but some of Aberdeen’s football was the best that I have seen under McInnes.

Even if Rangers do manage to pull off a win though, I think they are too far back to overcome Aberdeen now in second place. It would take an unlikely collapse from Aberdeen, and perhaps an even unlikelier level of consistency to be found by Rangers for that to happen.

I just can’t see it, and I think that Aberdeen will cement their credentials as the second-best team in the country.
