Part of a busy city centre road has been closed off due to an ongoing police incident.

West Nile Street has been shut off to all traffic and pedestrians from West George Street to St Vincent Street.

Several police vehicles and officers are in attendance, and a helicopter has also began to circle the area.

Police Scotland is unable to comment on the incident at this time.

However, undercover officers in stab-proof vests are present at the scene.

St Mary's Lane has also been taped-off.

One eyewitness saw the man with two Stanley blades and an axe looking in to the window of a building on West Nile Street.

He said he saw the man injuring himself.

“He was doing a lot of damage to himself,” he said.

“He had an axe on him as well. It was under his arm while he was holding the blades.

“The guy then walked away up West Nile Street.

“I walked after him and that’s when a police van pulled up.”

The eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said officers sprayed gas in to the man’s eyes and restrained him.

The two blades came away from his hands and landed near a lamppost.

The axe was put in to a black bag.

Paramedics then rushed on to the scene put him in the back of an ambulance.

The eyewitness added: “There was so much damage to his neck.” 

Another eyewitness who was working in a nearby pub told the Evening Times a man was running up West Nile Street.

She said the man then walked up to a black car and appeared to harm himself.

The eyewitness went on to say the man starting to bleed “a lot” from his neck and was taken to hospital after the incident.

She added: “He was running up the street and was being very threatening.

“It was a pretty traumatic experience for a lot of people.

“There was a lot of blood.”

Another witness described a traffic warden being "chased" by a man holding a weapon before the attacker turned a knife on himself.

Police were later seen inspecting a drain at the Handmade Burger before removing a device.

A police spokeswoman confirmed one person has been injured in the incident, but was unable to give further details. 

A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said that a 40-year-old man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
