AN EAST End councillor believes a proposal for a parking ban around Celtic Park on match days should incorporate a wider area.

Calton councillor Greg Hepburn wants Glasgow City Council to extend their current 1km proposal of a parking ban to areas including Calton, Bridgeton and the rest of Dalmarnock.

He believes failure to do so will only encourage Celtic supporters to park in these areas due to the proposed ban around the stadium.

He said: "One consequence of the initial proposal is that no neighbourhoods outside 1km of Celtic Park/The Emirates will be protected. "Three of those areas - namely the Calton, Bridgeton and the other half of Dalmarnock - lie between the currently proposed parking zone and the busy city centre."

He added: " I have called for these areas to be included in the scheme so that we don’t accidentally create a big problem for the people living there.

"I think that expanding the zone to include these areas would improve the scheme and address obvious concerns."

The parking controls would prevent supporters from parking within a zone around the stadium on match days.

The council say the zone would be in place at Parkhead three hours before the event starts and up to one hour after it finishes.

Residents living within the dedicated zone would be able to apply for parking permits.

Councillor Hepburn raised the plans at both Bridgeton and Dalmarnock Community Council and Calton Community Council.

It is understood both organisations support his proposal.

He said: "I’m supportive of the event day parking zone plan. It’s something that local people in the area have been requesting for a very long time.

"Issues like the emergency services not being able to access homes, cars being trapped in driveways and just a general inability for local residents to park have been a regular problem for many years. Moreover, these problems can lead to antisocial behaviour and arguments on the street.

"It’s a good scheme which makes sure that those living in the area are given free event day parking permits and will tackle a variety of the above complaints."

He added: "I have spoken to several local community groups about this issue, including both community councils and the local area associations, and with their support I have requested that the event day parking zone be expanded to include the three named areas.

"It’s important to remember that the scheme is still in its consultation phase."

The city council are also hoping to introduce a similar scheme at Ibrox stadium for when Rangers games are played.

The Evening Times previously reported that both Celtic FC and Rangers fan group Club 1872 have hit out at the scheme which could come into force next season.
