Dog-lovers from across Glasgow and Scotland are being urged to take to the streets of the capital to highlight the plight of one of the most abused breed of hounds in the world.

The ‘A Million Paws on Princes Street’ march is calling on people to walk to the Spanish Consulate with man’s best friend to help end the horrific abuse of Spanish podencos.

Organised by Podencos in Need Scotland (PINS), the team said: “Meet with your podencos at the East End of Princes Street Gardens to have a peaceful march through the gardens and up Castle Street to deliver a letter to the Spanish Consulate.

“So, get your marching paws on. We want a big turnout. All dogs are welcome, but Spanish rescue dogs extra, extra welcome.”

Spanish podencos are used for hunting, then thrown out after they are no longer wanted, explained PINS.

The group added: “They are used as hunting dogs in Spain and the Canary Islands and the hunters view their dogs as ‘tools’ and many practise cruel, outdated training to get the dogs ready to hunt.

“This leads to injured, sick and traumatised podencos flooding the shelters at the end of hunting season.

“Traditionally, they are not viewed as pets and so they struggle to find homes in Spain. This is why we work to draw attention to their plight and bring them to loving homes in the UK.

“We want to help raise awareness about what wonderful, characterful pets these animals can be.”

The ‘A Million Paws in Princes Street’ will take place on Sunday, April 30 from 12pm to 2pm. Click here for more information on the march.
