A Glasgow foodbank has issued an urgent appeal for supplies as struggling families across Scotland continue to turn to the centres for help.

Glasgow NE Foodbank, which aims to make life that bit easier for those in poverty in the northeast of the city - including Carntyne, Dennistoun, Royston, and Springburn - issued a message on its social media pages this afternoon.

The team said: “We are really low on UHT milk and juice just now.

“Sugar, tinned fruit, tinned fish, and pasta sauces could also be used.”

If you’re able to donate any of the above - or more - please click here to find out how you can get your supplies across to the Glasgow NE Foodbank team.

Use of the foodbanks in Scotland is “disproportionately higher” than in any other part of the UK  - and still increasing, reports our sister paper The National.

The announcement comes two weeks after generous Celtic fans donated massive amounts of food and much-needed everyday essentials at Parkhead.

The club’s charity arm, Celtic FC Foundation, partnered with Glasgow North East Foodbank to hold a collection ahead of a match at the stadium.

Celtic FC Foundation chief executive, Tony Hamilton, described how, above all, it was the supporters who needed to be credited for the one tonne-plus accumulated.

He said: “Once again, the Celtic supporters demonstrated tremendous generosity of spirit both in terms of volunteering and donating.

“Thousands of families in the west of Scotland, who rely on support from foodbanks, will be helped in the coming weeks because of this kindness.”
