Residents from across Glasgow are being urged to vote for their favourite community centre to win a free DIY makeover.

Four groups across the city have been shortlisted to take part in an online competition that offers the chance for some much-needed work to be completed - at no cost at all - by local tradesmen.

The organisations in the running are Glasgow East Women’s Aid (GEWA), FareShare in South Street, Quarriers Mavisbank Respite Centre in Govan, and Street Connect in the city centre.

The winner will be selected based on how many votes they receive in an online poll.

Residents from across the city can vote for one of the centres by clicking here.

So far, with over 250 votes, Quarriers is taking the lead.

GEWA, in Easterhouse, works to provide support for women, children, and young people who are affected by domestic abuse, while FareShare redistributes quality surplus food to groups working with vulnerable people in and around Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

Quarriers Mavaisbank provides one-to-one support for adults with learning disabilities, either in its residential/short stay setting or through flexible respite provided at home or on a short break.

Lastly, Street Connect in Cathedral Street - formerly The Christian Centre - works on the streets of the city by helping those homeless and sleeping rough by putting their faith in Christ.

The competition marks the official launch of Local Heroes, an online service set up by Scottish Gas where accredited local tradesman can be found to carry out jobs around the home in an attempt to crack down on cowboy builders.

Voting for the centres is open until May 2, with the winner receiving a new look on May 12.
