A MAN who murdered a pensioner by stabbing and strangling him at his home has been told he’ll spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Imrich Joni, 20, was convicted of murdering Gordon Bolam, 68, at the elderly man’s property in Pollokshields, last summer.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how the Slovakian citizen struck Mr Bolam with a knife before throttling him with a piece of fabric.

Joni, who has previous convictions for crimes of violence and dishonesty, then concealed Mr Bolam’s remains in a bedroom wardrobe.

In a bid to escape justice, Joni then washed upholstery, floors and other surfaces in an attempt to destroy DNA evidence.

He also got rid of the shoes and clothing he was wearing on the day.

But Joni was snared after detectives found his DNA around Mr Bolam’s property and on the ligature which placed around Mr Bolam’s throat.

Officers traced Joni, who was on court bail at the time of his crime, and brought him to justice.

Following conviction, judge Lady Scott told Joni she would defer sentence for the court to obtain a report about his character.

Joni, who lived at various addresses in the South Side, murdered Mr Bolam at a date between June 29, 2016 and July 14, 2016.

Police discovered Mr Bolam’s body in his property in the city’s Kenmure Street and a murder investigation was launched immediately.

Officers investigating Joni found he was on bail for another matter at Glasgow Sheriff Court at the time he murdered Mr Bolam.

Part of the bail conditions given were that he wasn’t supposed to be in Glasgow for any reason other than to attend court.

Meanwhile, officers searching for Joni traced him in Edinburgh.

He was arrested after breaking into the Festival Theatre at the city’s Nicolson Street.

Officers then charged him with murdering Mr Bolam.

Jurors returned verdicts of guilt to charges of murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
