JOEY Barton, the former Rangers midfielder, has been banned from football for 18 months by the Football Association after admitting to a series of gambling offences.

The FA today announced the player, who had his contract with the Ibrox club terminated in November following a fall-out with then manager Mark Warburton, has been suspended from football and all football activity with immediate effect.

It had been claimed that between March 26, 2006, and May 13, 2016, he had placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8.

Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Burnley midfielder was also fined £30,000 and warned as to his future conduct.

The FA said that written reasons will follow in due course in a brief statement on their official website.

Barton joined Barclays Premier League club Burnley in January.
