A FATHER-of five has been banned from the road after drink driving twice in three weeks.

Gurdharam Shaan was stopped on Bath Street in September 2016 after police suspected he was drunk.

They pulled him over on September 30 and a breathalyser revealed he was almost three times the legal limit.

The 37-year-old had 57mg of alcohol in 100mg of breath, compared to the 22mg limit.

Three weeks later, on October 22, former council worker Shaan was found slumped over the wheel of the car on Dumbreck Road at 9.15am.

The vehicle, which belonged to his wife, still had its engine running while Shaan was inside.

A court heard passersby saw him in the car and thought he was unconscious, and could smell alcohol.

He was found to be almost five times the limit with 100mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, and was arrested and charged.

Shaan, from Cairngorm Road in Newlands, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he was banned from driving for one year for the Bath Street incident, and five years for the Dumbreck Road incident.

His solicitor said his client had acknowledged he has “a problem with alcohol” and added: “He is remorseful.

“To his credit he has referred himself to the Glasgow Council on Alcohol.”

The solicitor added one of the reasons Shaan had given for his drinking was that he “was under some strain as his fifth child was about to be born and this child had not been planned.”

Sheriff Lindsay Wood told the father-of-five: “You are in a pickle.

“That second incident where you are in your car and you are slumped over the wheel...The problem was by then you are not likely to do any damage but before then you could have killed yourself and killed others including children.”

He was ordered to complete 150 hours of community service in six months and was given a restriction order, meaning he has to stay in his house during the evenings for eight months.
