BILLY Connolly has been chosen as the name to don Glasgow Airport.

In a recent poll the Big Yin was the resounding choice of the people of Glasgow to further raise the profile of the building.

Famed for his beard, big hair and banana boots, Billy Connolly stormed the polls with a whopping 56 per cent of the vote.

The Evening Times took to the streets to ask what they thought of the choice.

Phil Ward, 51, a test analyst from Giffnock said: “I love that idea.

“Glasgow has a lot of famous sons but not many have done as much for the city as Billy Connolly has.

“He has made such an impact.”

Michelle Jarvis, 30, a receptionist from Lambhill said: “I think that would be great. He is known all over the world and he does make you proud to be Scottish.

“He’s such a character and I think he deserves it.”

Patrick Harley, 30, a support worker from Partick said” “It’s a bit left field but I don’t see why not.

“Belfast named their airport after George Best and I think someone like Billy Connolly would be just as deserving.

“There are other famous Glaswegians who would deserved the same honour.

“But right now I can’t think of any.”

William Campbell, 56, a maintenance engineer from Cambuslang was the only person asked who was against the proposal.

He said: “As soon as he made his money he moved to America.

“He’s lived most of his life over there and only comes back to Glasgow to get more money from touring.

“It should just stay as Glasgow Airport - plenty of folk still use it.”

Nick Patrick, 25, a designer from Dennistoun said: “We should definitely name the airport after the Big Yin.

“Not only for what he’s done as a comedian and an actor but for the way he has confronted his recent illnesses. He’s taken his Parkinsons and his cancer head on and that’s an inspiration to a lot of people.

“He deserved it.”

Anne Devlin, 63, a teacher from Clydebank: “It would not bother me at all if the airport was renamed after him - it would be quite nice.

“I think the people of Paisley would like to see the airport named Paisley Airport if it was to be renamed. But I don’t think anyone could argue against the building being named after him.”

Connie Campbell, 21, a retail assistant from Cambuslang said: “That is a really good idea.

“It would also be a really nice time to do it.

“He is so Scottish as well - he would be a great person to name the airport after.”

The original survey was carried out by HolidayExtras.com and 500 people from Glasgow took part.

Fellow funnyman and actor, Stanley Baxter came in second, with 11 per cent of the overall votes, and daytime TV favourite Lorraine Kelly followed with eight per cent.

Ant Clarke Cowell, communications director at Holiday Extras, said: “Whilst we don’t believe that Glasgow Airport will be changing its name anytime soon, we think ‘Glasgow Billy Connolly Airport’ has a great ring to it and we weren’t surprised to see him taking this poll by storm.”
