There’s been a surge in the popularity of prosecco in recent years, with even warnings of apparent shortages sending fans of the fizz into a frenzy.

However, for those who are tired of the tipple and keen on trying something now, an Italian company has just launched a range of BLUE wine - and Italians are apparently not happy about it.

The company behind the unusual creation, Saraceni, said it was “proud” to present “the world’s first blue wine that makes your life more vibrant and glamorous.”

Described as “velvety and seductive” by the company, critics have reportedly told MailOnline that the seven per cent alcohol content is below the 10 per cent required by Italian law for it to even be called wine.

Wladimiro Gobbo, a member of Italy’s Sommelier Association, told the site the product was “embarrassing” and that the drink is “simply an insult to our wine tradition.”

Saraceni, however, says of Blumond, which is a mix of curacao, peach, and prosecco: “We wanted to create something very special, excellent and unique that has not been created before, changing the colour to a vibrant blue and making the champagne sweeter and easier to drink.”

The 750ml bottle costs an affordable £16.94 but, with £25.37 slapped on top to cover shipping, we’re not so keen to buy anymore.
