GENEROUS charity supporters are to help raise vital funds for people with mesothelioma.

Clydeside Action on Asbestos is to host their first gala ball tonight at the Grand Central Hotel.

The glamour evening will see 260 guests enjoy entertainment, drinks, dinner and an auction, with cash going straight to help those affected by asbestos-related conditions, as well as their families.

Phyllis Craig MBE, Clydeside Action on Asbestos Chairwoman, said the event was essential to help the organisation raise funds.

She explained: "We have decided to have the event because funding has been slashed to a minimum.

"We also want to do more to support the NHS in terms of Scottish nurses, and we want to contribute to people like Dr Kevin Blyth (A Glasgow researcher looking in to blood tests to diagnose mesothelioma).

"We want to make sure there are enough resources for the group work to ensure everyone gets hospitality and make sure we can travel throughout the country to do this,."

The charity, which has been on the go since 1984, helps people who have asbestos-related illnesses, as well as their families, with practical and emotional support.

It has led legal challenges on behalf of victims, which resulted in the Rights of Relatives (Mesothelioma) (Scotland) Act 2007.

Glasgow Times:

Phyllis said: "For us to continue this work, you would only have to ask any one of the clients what this means to them.

"It means an awful lot about maximising their income.

"The support groups we offer also help to reduce their isolation. This charity is like a family and it keeps everyone together."

Along with a champagne reception and auction hosted by Donald Findlay QC,

Among those attending will be victims of asbestos-related illnesses and relatives, politicians, union representatives from Unison, GMB, Unite and Aslef, medical professionals and lawyers.

Three top Glasgow law firms - Thompsons Solicitors, Digby Brown and Slater Gordon, have all generously helped sponsor different parts of the evening.

Along with food, drink and entertainment, five honourary membership awards and a posthumous outstanding achievement award are to be given out.
