UNIVERSITY bosses are bringing the art world outside.

Passers-by the Glasgow School of Art are in for a surprise as staff and students turn construction hoardings into a make shift gallery.

As work continues on the Mackintosh building, workers have put protective barriers up around the site.

Staff from the art school have created a timeline of the building’s 173 year history using graphics and photographs.

The decorative hoarding, which is 6 feet high, is made up of multiple panels and will be attached to the existing plain hoarding.

It is hoped it will create a colourful picture of the history of the school and entertain those walking past - as well as give them the chance to learn more about the school.

One section of the hoarding will be used for students to display their art works.

The timeline shows the earliest days of the art school and goes on to when the restoration of the building will be complete.

There is also a section showing the many Turner Prize winners from the Glasgow School of Art, such as Simon Starling and Martin Boyce.

The rebuilding programme follows the devastating fire in the Grade A listed Charles Rennie Mackintosh building in May 2014.

The blaze caused significant damage to the west wing, including the loss of the celebrated Mackintosh Library.

A host of leading artists, including Sir Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Simon Starling, have used material from the fire-damaged art school to create new work to be sold at auction in a fundraising drive.
