THAT sound is the noise of a thousand cake loving Glasgow hearts breaking.

After weeks of rumours, Bakery47 has officially announced it is to close later this year.

Opened nearly three years ago in Govanhill, the bakery sees queues form on a Saturday and Sunday morning before 9am as locals - and those who travel across the city for freshly baked bread and pastries - wait for its doors to open.

Owners Sam and Anna Luntley said in a statement that they have taken the bakery as far as they can as its success has left them "exhausted".

The couple, who are artists as well as bakers, said the bakery was never meant to be a business but rather a space for people to meet, eat and make.

As such, they will not be selling Bakery47 on or relocating from their Victoria Road site.

The stament says: "Over the last 6 years Bakery47 has evolved from a quiet, collaborative and craft based endeavour in our home kitchen into a fully functioning bakery and cafe space enjoyed and patronised by loyal customers far beyond what we ever imagined.

"We are thrilled and delighted - in awe of what we have created - but also all-consumed, distracted from our aims and exhausted.

"We don’t want Bakery47 to expand, we don’t want to step back and we don’t want to sell ‘the business’ because in our understanding Bakery47 is a happening, an experience, an endeavour - we are the hands that make, create and provide and as we want the time, energy and focus to explore other means of doing what we do, the bakery in its current form can’t go on.

"We will continue to bake but we want to find a new format for that - to reinvest our energies and ideals – so rather than let the bakery at 76 Victoria Road be compromised we will close."

The bakery will shut its doors on Sunday, September 17.

But there is some good news, as Sam and Anna say they will continue to bake.

And they thanked everyone who has supported their endeavour.

They added: "Without wanting to be too final - September is many loaves away - we thank each and every person who has stepped into Bakery47 and made our venture possible.

"It has truly been a pleasure - making something which matters to us matter to others.

"The world would be a much darker and sadder place without people willing to queue in the cold rain of the early morn for a croissant, to come back time and time again for a sourdough loaf, to indulge in routines and celebrating each day as different.

"Your reception has been our success.

"We hope that post september you will continue to break bread with those closest to you, to create joyous moments, to revel in the indulgence and small luxury of a sweet slice and most of all to continue to be generous in supporting the people who aspire to make life different."

And as one of those who has queued in the rain time and again for a salted millionaire's shortbread or a cheese and Marmite croissant - thank you Sam and Anna, from Glasgow's south side.
