THE Archbishop of Glasgow Philip Tartaglia will hold a mass in at a Calton church to celebrate the achievements of the Lisbon Lions.

The mass at St Mary's Church will take place on Saturday, May 20 at 11am.

The service is part of the series of special events taking place to mark the 50th anniversary of Celtic’s European Cup triumph in Lisbon back in 1967.

Celtic FC was formally constituted at a meeting in St Mary's church hall on East Rose Street, now Forbes Street, by the club's founder Brother Walfrid on  November 6, 1887.

The celebration mass was proposed by the church, and Archbishop Philip Tartaglia will be the principal celebrant, assisted by Father Tom White, who is parish priest at St Mary’s.

Celtic FC said on their official website: "The mass will not only mark the Lisbon Lions’ footballing achievement but also reinforce Celtic’s values as a club open to all, which have been an integral part of the club’s character since its inception."

The Reverend Ian Miller will represent the Moderator of the Church of Scotland and representatives from other faiths will also be in attendance.

Some of the Lisbon Lions will be at the mass, along with other invited guests, and supporters are invited to attend what will be another special Celtic occasion.

A show at the SSE Hydro to celebrate the achievements of the Lisbon Lions is also being held this month.

The Celebrate '67 will take place at the Glasgow venue on Thursday, May 25.

The surviving players from the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in 1967 will take part in a series of events in May, including a civic reception at Glasgow City Chambers and a tribute lunch.
