PHOTOGRAPHY students snapped up five awards at a national awards ceremony.

Five students from North Lanarkshire College were in the frame as each claimed accolades for some of the best shots taken across the country at the British Institute of Professional Photography awards.

From the quintet of shutter-happy prize winners, one gold, one silver and three bronze awards were shared between them.

Sally Neil claimed a Gold in the advertising category for her image of an Adidas trainer.

Samantha Sweeney won two awards. She won a bronze in the advertising category for her image Be Bold In Gold and a silver in the open category for her image The Bay of Five Lands.

Helen Fleming won a Bronze in the photojournalism category for her image A Master and His Hounds which is part of a larger documentary on fox hounds.

And Jim McFarlane took home a Bronze in the open category for his image Rub a Dub Dub taken on an early morning landscape photography trip.

In addition, Gary Lee and Edgar Basmakov, who are two recent graduates of HND Photography at New College Lanarkshire, also picked up awards at the ceremony.

Thirty students and lecturers attended the ceremony which was held on Sunday the Marriott Hotel in Edinburgh.

Fiona Thomson said: “The BIPP Awards are an extremely important extracurricular activity, as the opportunity to gain success at a national level gives our students a great sense of achievement and also looks great on their CVs.

“The students are a great credit to us and they continue to raise the bar in the standard of work that is produced every year.

“We were especially encouraged by the judges’ comments that any of the winners would have been well-placed within a professional category.

“We would like to extend our congratulations to all the winners as well as everyone else who took part in the competition this year.”

This is the seventh year that New College Lanarkshire students have won a gold in the competition.

A showcase of work by photography students will form part of the Creative Industries Showcase 2017.

The event takes place at the North Lanarkshire College’s Motherwell campus on May 25 from 6pm.

This free public event will also feature work by current students of 3D computer animation, computer aided architectural design and technology (CAADT) and computer aided draughting and design (CADD).
