CELTIC have become the first team in the Scottish top flight to go a full league season unbeaten in over 100 years.

Leigh Griffiths and Stuart Armstrong scored to finish the league campaign with a 2-0 victory over Hearts making the current squad the first Celtic side since 1897/98 to complete a season without conceding defeat.

The same feat was last achieved by Rangers in 1898-99, over an 18-game season.

Entitled the ‘Invincibles’ the the Hoops have now joined just three other teams to have earned the title in their respective leagues.

They join Juventus, Arsenal and Barry Town who all became unbeaten champions over a 38-game campaign in recent history.

In the process Brendan Rogers and his squad have set several new records as they accrued the most points, scored the most goals and won by the biggest margin in a single season in Scotland.

Finishing on 106 points they managed to beat the previous record of 103 points set by Martin O’Neil’s Celtic side in the 2002/03 season.

The points tally is also a new European record - beating the total reached by Welsh side Barry Town AFC who finished with 105 in 1996-97.

Yesterday’s second-half strike meant Celtic bettered the 105 league goals they scored in 2003-04.

Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona are the other European sides to have hit 100 or more points in a season.

The winning margin was bettered by one point with the league won 30 points ahead of second place Aberdeen who tallied up 76 points.

Fans were also in fine form as words of praise flooded social media over a one-off tifo display which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions winning the European Cup before kick-off.

The huge display came about after supporter club the Green Brigade raised over £12,000 to create the spectacle.

A statement from the group also said a further £9,000 was raised on the day.

Celtic now need to win the Scottish Cup to complete a domestic treble with the final against Aberdeen on Saturday.
