SCOTLAND international Christophe Berra has become Hearts' first summer signing after penning a three-year deal in the capital.

The centre-back returns to Tynecastle after leaving in January 2009 for a move to England that saw him make over 300 appearances for Wolves and Ipswich Town.

The Championship club announced earlier this month that the 32-year-old wanted to return north of the border to spend more time with his family and a deal with the Jambos was confirmed on Tuesday.

Berra made his Hearts debut aged 18 in 2003 and went on to captain the club and help them to Scottish Cup glory in 2006.

The 35-time Scotland internationalist scored four times in 106 appearances for the Jam Tarts during his first spell and returns to become Ian Cathro's first signing of the summer.
