A civic reception has been held in Glasgow to mark the 50th anniversary of the Lisbon Lions winning the European Cup in Portugal in 1967.

The event was held at Glasgow’s City Chambers on Monday as part of a week of celebrations.

Jock Stein’s Lisbon Lions made footballing history by becoming the first team in the UK to win the European Cup on May 25, 1967.

The team beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon with goals from Stevie Chalmers and Tommy Gemmell placing them in the history books.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Eva Bolander, hosted the event and was one of the many people who gave speeches at the ceremony.

Celtic chairman Ian Bankier also joined the Lisbon Lions including captain Billy McNeill, Bertie Auld, Jim Craig, Bobby Lennox, John Clark, Willie Wallace, John Hughes, John Fallon and Charlie Gallagher, and their families for the occasion.

The reception was an acknowledgement of the importance of Celtic’s historic triumph, not only for football, but to the city and people of Glasgow.

Jock Stein’s side were all born within a 30-mile radius of Celtic Park with many of the players coming from the East End of the city.

Their historic victory has been celebrated over the last week with Celtic fans covering the entire stadium with a Tifo on Sunday’s match against Hearts.

The supporters have also sung a Lisbon Lions tribute song on the 67th minute of every match this season.

On Thursday night, Rod Stewart will lead a concert at the SSE Hydro.
