GLASGOW’S last surviving member of the Battle of Britain will be honoured by a specially created garden at the Ideal Home Show this weekend.

Corporal Joe Parker, who served in the RAF for six years, will be the focus of a show garden created by the charity Erskine for the 70th anniversary show.

Joe was a resident of The Erskine Home for 11 years and opened the Ideal Home Show in 2013 - the first year the charity became a partner.

The garden celebrates the vital work of the Royal Air Force and was inspired by Joe and his story of flying home to Glasgow.

Its design signifies the emotional flight from the battlefields with a replica WWII Spitfire in the Glasgow Squadron 602 colours as the centrepiece.

The plane will be suspended over the battlefields, sand and sea with a backdrop of poppies on one side and a story of the garden’s conception on the other.

Joe Parker, son of the late Joe Parker, said: “My father proudly served in 602 Squadron maintaining a variety of Spitfire Aircraft.

“He often said that they were some of the best years of his life giving purpose and forming new friendships.”

“In his later years he repeated similar words, but this time of ‘his home’ in Erskine where his long life was extended and expanded giving purpose with his Erskine family and friends.

“It was a joy to see dad enjoying life again supporting Erskine in their many fundraising campaigns – it seemed as though Erskine was meant for Joe, and Joe was meant for Erskine.”

Over 45,000 visitors are expected to attend the Bank Holiday event.

For the first year, the Show will host the Eat and Drink Festival celebrating the best of Scottish food and drink produce.

To mark the important anniversary, the event collaborated with exhibitor BoConcept, the Danish interior specialists, to celebrate the best of old and new, making the most of the exhibitor’s sleek, minimalist designs, in stark contrast to the post-war styles from the late 1940s.
