A MAN has been left needing "round the clock care" after the driver of a car ploughed into a safety barrier on the motorway.

Farukh Khan was in the Toyota Yaris driven by Sophia Ali, 21, on December 28, 2014 that she wasn’t insured to drive.

Ali drove her sister’s car along the motorway and pulled in front of another driver, forcing him to brake.

She then veered across three lanes of the M8, hit the kerb and barrier that impaled part of the car including passenger area.

Ali claims Mr Khan grabbed the wheel but he has never been in a position since the incident to contradict that.

Following the incident, Mr Khan was put into an induced coma and part of the skull bone was removed to relieve pressure on the brain.

A hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court heard the injuries were life threatening, and he regained consciousness two weeks later.

Procurator fiscal depute Stewart Bell said: "His speech and behaviour presents at the level of an infant. He requires round the clock care.”

Ali, from Cardonald, pleaded guilty to driving carelessly and to driving without insurance.

She was disqualified for nine months, given eight penalty points and a £600 fine.

Sheriff Daniel Scullion said: “It’s appropriate that I make it clear the charge to which Miss Ali pled guilty is a charge of careless driving in which the Crown does not suggest any causal connection between Miss Ali’s driving and the injuries sustained by Mr Khan.

“Whilst I recognise the immensely tragic injuries and circumstances Mr Khan faces as do those close to him, in disposing of this case I have to leave this out of account, as I must.”
