GLASGOW have been asked to look out the hiking boots after a national charity set up a walk which will take in some of the city’s shining examples of community spirit.

The new event thought up by the Eden Project is asking folks in Glasgow to be part of a UK-wide event which sees five teams of walkers stroll across the country to celebrate initiatives in their area.

Starting in Bately, West Yorkshire, the event will gradually make it’s way to Glasgow in June and will stop in time for the Great Get Together - an event inspired by former MP Jo Cox who died last year.

Yaman Shalaan , a volunteer at Refuweegee, will be one of the many walkers hoped to be setting off throughout the city.

The Syrian refugee who moved to Glasgow said: “Refuweegee are delighted to be part of such a brilliant initiative.

“The people that we meet and work with everyday have been forcibly displaced from their homes and have often had to make long and hard journeys to safety.

“We are looking forward to using our time walking The Great Big Walk as a time to reflect on this and are delighted to be doing it as a group which is reflective of the collective community that Refuweegee is.

“To also get to spend time within so many communities and with some amazing groups along the route is absolutely fantastic, we can’t wait to meet everyone and hear their stories.”

Each day, along the route, the walkers will stop in a different community to shine a light on powerfully ordinary people doing amazing projects and events that bring communities together. They will share conversations food, stories and experiences together.

Emily Watts, Eden’s Scottish country manager, the organisation behind the Big Together idea, said: “People can get involved in The Great Big Walk by showing support and cheering the walkers along their way. Or go for a stroll with a neighbour, a tour with the town or anything in between and join The Big Lunch on 18 June for the biggest community celebration the UK has ever seen.”

The event is funded by the National Lottery.

Martin Cawley, the director of the Big Lottery Fund Scotland, said: “Thanks to money generated by National Lottery players, The Great Big Walk is connecting people and communities across the UK. We are excited to be inviting the walkers to visit some amazing Scottish projects, created by and for local people, and share their experiences with others.”

The five teams of walkers will ‘head home’ in time to join The Big Lunch as the highlight of The Great Get Together celebrations.

The penultimate which was set up to bring neighbourhoods together will mark the first anniversary of her Jo Cox’s death.
