THEY are riding high after winning a major music competition, getting ready to record in the studio for the first time and preparing for a busy summer of gigs – but performing at the Glasgow Community Champions Awards is still the icing on the cake.

Talented trio Loxie - Talia Webb, from Dennistoun, and Teah McAfferty and Holly Thornton, from Cambuslang - won Renfrewshire’s Live and Unsigned 2017 contest earlier this month, earning themselves £500 worth of recording time at Paisley’s Brick Lane Studios.

Now the young singers are delighted to be taking to the stage at tomorrow’s southside heat.

Talia's mum Andrea explained: "The girls are really excited about performing at the Community Champions awards. They have had an amazing few weeks, winning Live and Unsigned and they have a busy summer coming up.

"But they are really looking forward to the awards - it's a great local event."

The event, which is the second in this year’s Community Champions calendar, takes place at Pollok Community Centre.

Loxie, who are now students of the Angela McCallum School of Music, join a long list of fantastic young acts to be showcased on stage at our Community Champions and Streets Ahead events.

Angela said: "Talia, Holly and Teah are amazing - they have such energy together and are doing really well. They are a real bundle of joy!"

Tomorrow night’s Glasgow Community Champions Awards, supported by our partners Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership, Glasgow Housing Association, Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland, pay tribute to the inspirational individuals and dedicated groups who work hard to improve their communities for all.

Battling it out for the Team Award are South West Community Cycles, Glasgow SE Foodbank, Castlemilk Parish Community Meals and the KP Café Team.

Andrew Tomlinson, Marilyn Cunningham, Tahir Mohammed and Angie Sivagnanasundaram are the Individual Award finalists.

Glasgow SE Foodbank, Service Improvement Group and Family Addiction Support Service are battling it out for the Public Services Award.

Constable Jacqueline Campbell, Community Safety Advocate Christopher Morgan and Police Scotland’s South East Local Problem Solving Team will go head to head in the Uniform Services Award.

The finalists in the Senior Award are Hannah Gracie and Jean McEwan; Violet Robertson; James Macmillan; and Janice McLauchlan.

Antonia McTernan, Craig Brown, St John Paul II Primary School and Bethany Donaghy will battle it out for the Young Award.

The finalists for the Health and Wellbeing Award are Milk Café, Rangers Charity Foundation, Macmillan @ Glasgow Libraries and Pollokshaws Hub Community Garden.

And finally, the Sport Award will go to either Our Lady of the Annunciation Football Club, Glasgow Gladiators Powerchair Football Club or Southside Boxing Club.

The winners of the South heat will join their fellow champions from the North West and North East at a grand final in the City Chambers in November.

Evening Times Editor Graham Shields said: “After a very successful north-east heat, it’s time to celebrate all the good work being done in the south of Glasgow.

“The judges had a difficult time choosing winners from an excellent collection of entries and we can’t wait to pay tribute to them all tomorrow night.”
