GOVANHILL campaigners are demanding answers from Police Scotland as they claim more must be done to protect residents.

The Govanhill Community Campaign held a meeting in May with Chief Inspector Ross Allan, which was attended by local councillor Mhairi Hunter and a representative from Govanhill Housing Association.

After hearing of residents’ continuing concerns about crime in the area, the group is now organising a march through the south side community.

They also have a petition, which has currently attracted more than 2000 signatures.

Frances Stojilkovic, of the campaign, said: “We plan to hit the streets and get more signatures. We are sure more people will want to back us.

“Our meeting last month was very well attended and a success but there is a sense of frustration that things are not getting better.

“We have people afraid to leave their homes unattended because of the number of housebreakings we are being told about.

“There are also large numbers of people in Govanhill Park at night, making the park a no-go zone for anyone else.

“It seems like very little is being done to tackle crime in Govanhill.”

The march will take place on June 24, leaving at noon from Govanhill Park and walking to Nicola Sturgeon’s constituency office on Dixon Road.

Inspector Alex Hutton of Police Scotland said: “We are aware of the proposed march in Govanhill at the end of this month, and any activity will be policed appropriately.

“Police Scotland continues to be committed to working with the residents of Govanhill to address the issues and concerns in the community.

"Anyone with information or concerns can contact Cathcart Police Station via 101 or speak to our officers on patrol in the area.”

Glasgow City Council confirmed an application for the march has been submitted.
