It was all cheers and applause at the Four Corners this morning as Canadian coffee chain Tim Hortons finally opened up to the public.

Hundreds of people rushed down to the location at the corner of streets Union and Argyle as the first store in the UK welcomed Glaswegians with open arms - and loads of prizes.

Crowds had even camped out overnight in the hopes they would be among the first to taste Tim Hortons’ famous Double Double coffee and Timbits when the ribbon was cut just after 9am.

Two Canadian ‘Mounties’ were on hand to keep the crowds entertained and occupied as they waited to get into the store.

The first customer to enter was given free coffee for a full year, while the next ten received 50 free Timbits - the shop’s signature bite-sized doughnuts - every month for an entire year.

The next 100 guests after that were offered a free breakfast.

The Evening Times was on hand live at the opening and spoke with several people, one of whom had travelled into Glasgow from Falkirk after a 5am start.

CEO of the company, veteran Burger King exec Elías Díaz Sesé, was only too happy to speak with us to lay out his vision and hopes for the store.

As the first location in Britain to get a Tim Hortons, the chain hopes to take its famous coffee, baked goods, and Canadian charm nationwide over the next 12 months.

Elías added: “We are thrilled to be joining the Glasgow community, and we look forward to getting to know our guests and sharing some of our favourite products with them.”
