Glasgow’s only Green candidate in the General election has said he will fight for the right people to live in dignity not poverty.

Patrick Harvie Green candidate in Glasgow North said he will be campaigning for a universal basic income to guarantee a minimum standard of living.

Mr Harvie will step down at Holyrood as MSP for Glasgow if he manages to unseat Patrick Grady of the SNP.

Mr Harvie visited Glasgow West Carers Centre to meet carers often struggling on low incomes.

He said: “Greens will make the case for a social security system based on a Universal Basic Income. We need a Green voice to stand up for everyone’s right to live with dignity, free from the fear of poverty.”

He said there was growing support for the citizens income idea which rejects a means tested benefits system and he wants it used across Scotland.

He added: “A Basic or Citizen’s Income is a longstanding Green policy which has been gathering momentum. Trials are planned in Fife and Glasgow, and countries such as Finland are piloting it, but I want to make sure that all of Scotland and the UK works towards building a welfare system that removes the stigma of benefits and helps promote equality.”

Mr Harvie is one of three Green candidates standing in the election. The others are in Edinburgh and Falkirk.
