A SELFLESS Glasgow schoolgirl has cut half of her hair off to create a wig for children with cancer.

Yasmine Baker, from Priesthill, was inspired to get the chop after seeing another young girl lose her hair to the disease.

The generous 11-year-old cut off 12 inches of her hair in front of an assembly hall full of pupils and staff at Darnley Primary School to be sent to the Little Princess Trust.

Ahead of the big day, she raised just under £300 to go towards Ashlee’s Neuroblastoma Appeal.

Yasmine and her mum Debbie, 43, met Ashlee at the Beatson Cancer Centre where her gran Margaret Douglas was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Debbie explained: “My mum was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2014, and at the end of the year she was going through radiotherapy and we were at The Beatson for five weeks.

“Ashlee was going through radiotherapy as well, she was only eight-years-old at the time.

“My mum and Ashlee finished their treatment just before Christmas and we kind of lost contact. Sadly my mum passed away in March 2015 but she was always saying how lovely Ashlee was.

“I got in contact with Ashlee’s mum through Facebook and I was gutted to find out that her cancer had came back after her being in remission. “

When Yasmine heard the news, her thoughts immediately went to the fact that Ashlee would lose her hair once again and remembered the impact the loss had on her grandmother.

Debbie adds: “We had a think about what we could do to help and Yasmine decided that she wanted to grow her hair to make a long wig for someone in need.

“She’s usually quite a shy girl so getting her hair cut in front of an assembly hall was a big deal for her.

“The school were great. They played a short video about the Little Princess Trust before the hairdresser came in to do Yasmine’s hair.

“Everyone including myself was very emotional”

Before the final cut, the primary seven pupil gave a short speech to her classmates about the importance of helping others, leaving her friends and mum in tears.

Her mum said: “When she got a hold of the first section of hair to come off she was a bit shocked but she’s pleased with the result and knows that she’s done a great thing for charity.”
