There is a lot of fun is to be found in another recently-refurbished unit at the other end of Argyle Street. Maggie Mays, the Trongate bar that has been a firm favourite since it opened a decade ago. Now owned by the same group as the outstanding establishments Brel, Sloane’s and Blackfriars, the pub’s recent £400,000 facelift has given it a sleeker, more industrial – more muscular, even – appearance. It’s all very modern – very Finnieston, you might say – with its new neon lights, dark steel and exposed copper pipes.

It’s a bit like when the mumbling, scruffy, dusty-booted Kings of Leon disappeared after King of the Rodeo and came back the hunky arena rock band of On Call and Sex on Fire. Except, of course, that Maggie’s isn’t going to disappear up its own fundament and release a load of rubbish albums. Instead, with the new stage, open-plan layout and revitalised basement, this is a boozer that has been turned up to 11.
