It's hard to write about anything other than the election this week but it's even harder considering that at the time of writing I don't know how it will all turn out as the final result are still a few hours away. So, as you're reading this now, you will already know who the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is going to be.

Depending on that outcome you may either be very happy today or very sad or maybe you didn't vote at all and you're feeling very naughty just like Theresa May felt when she was running through that farmer's field of wheat way back when. Oh the internet had a right good laugh at that one didn't it? Even former First Minister Alex Salmond had a pop at Mrs May when he tweeted a picture of himself casually standing in a field with the caption “Tempted to be naughty.”

When I was a kid we’d play kirby in the street which always resulted in the ball bouncing off the pavement so hard that it went flying into Mrs Morrison's garden and we knew we were never getting it back. She wasn't the most friendly soul Mrs Morrison, God love her, although I don't think we helped matters any by playing chap door run away in the street on a daily basis either. Speaking of which I remember when I was working at STV and a lovely guy from down south came up to produce The Hour for a few months. He was quite posh and a great laugh but I remember vividly one day telling a story and chap door run away was mentioned.

He didn't have a clue what I was talking about so I explained it was a game we played when we were children. You'd creep up to someone's door, chap or knock it and then run away before they came to answer it. Suddenly his face lit up an he said “oh I see, you mean you played ding, dong, dash!” I burst out laughing and explained that not many people had doorbells where I grew up in the early 80’s and we certainly didn't have a half a mile driveway to ‘dash’ down afterwards but yes essentially it was the same game.

No matter if you're a chap door, run away or a ding, dong dash kinda person we all want the best from this life. We want to work hard, fall in love, have an abundance of friends and family around us and most of all we want to live in a fair society that treats each and everyone of us the same.

We need and absolutely depend on our elected members of parliament to deliver the best opportunities for us, to keep their pledges and promises made to us and, in light of the terrible acts of terrorism that have taken place over the last three months in this country, to protect us from future harm.

It's a lot to ask I know because politicians are only human too but that's why it's important to really do your research and vote for those individuals that actually mean what they say and who can absolutely follow through on their policies once elected to parliament because they are there for you, to represent you and to above all fight for you when it comes to getting the best possible outcomes for the communities we live in.

It's all done and dusted now I suppose and whoever the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is I hope he or she is fully prepared for the enormity of the task that lies ahead, fighting the war on terror and guiding us through these Brexit negotiations not just for us but more importantly for our future generations who deserve a country and a world safe enough to live, work and play those children's games in.
