A ‘HAPLESS’ thief was caught after falling asleep at the crime scene.

Scott Colahan was high on Valium when he broke into the Boyd Orr building at Glasgow University.

His defence lawyer told Glasgow Sheriff Court it was an “unusual” crime.

Colahan, 37, was pleaded guilty to stealing computer equipment, first aid supplies and a mobile phone but these were recovered from him when he was detained.

Sheriff Gerard Bonnar was told the stolen goods were worth around £200.

During the break in at the university on February 4, 2017, Colahan was found asleep at a desk.

The court heard he is not longer “in the habit” of taking drugs and has a stable family life with his girlfriend and children.

His defence lawyer said: “It is a slightly unusual offence. He did not go with the intention of breaking in to the university or stealing from the university.”

Sheriff Bonnar said some “aspects of the offence here are somewhat hapless.”

He added: “Breaking into a property is a serious matter, especially someone with a record like yours.”

Colahan, of Viewpoint Place in Springburn, was sentenced to a 12 month supervision order.

He must also wear a tag for the next 110 days, which will restrict his movements from 7pm until 7am.
