TWO DRIVERS have been hit with massive bills after refusing to pay fines for years.

A Lanarkshire man had to fork out £1500 for seven fines slapped on him for a range of crimes, including drink driving, using his phone at the wheel and driving without insurance.

He handed over the cash after his Vauxhall Vivaro was clamped by officers on April 27. 2017.

He had first been fined in 2013 for two offences of driving and using his phone.

In 2015, he received a further four fines - totalling more than £1000 - for drink driving, driving whilst banned, driving without tax, without insurance and being the keeper of an uninsured vehicle.

Before his vehicle was clamped, he had coughed up just £80 towards the total cost of the fines.

Another driver from Airdrie handed over £1200 worth in fines payments after his VW was clamped.

He had been fined after being convicted of having a baseball bat, classed as an offensive weapon, in public and also for not turning up to court.

A vehicle arrestment order was issued by Airdrie Sheriff Court and his car was clamped on June 19,. 2017, after which he paid up.

Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service Chief Operations Officer David Fraser said: “The fines enforcement team continue to be highly effective in securing unpaid fines irrespective of how old they are – ignoring your fine is very unwise.

" Failure to pay, or to engage with our officers, will result in strong sanctions being taken including arrestment of wages, bank accounts, your car being clamped or inconvenience and embarrassment by being arrested when travelling abroad.”
