A BUS firm boss has blasted dangerous vandals who hurl objects at moving vehicles on a busy motorway, fearing they could kill someone with their thoughtless actions.

Essbee Coaches’ director Tom Morris attack on vandals comes after one of his vehicles was subject to an attack by thugs on the M80 motorway recently.

His driver was travelling in a coach packed with passengers who were attending a wedding party when stones were thrown at the vehicle from an overhead bridge on the M80 at Cumbernauld.

Windows were hit on the coach costing around £1,000 worth of damage.

No one was injured during the attack which happened at around 6.45pm on Saturday, June 10.

Tom, who is also office manager for the Coatbridge based firm, said: “If people keep throwing objects, missiles or whatever from bridges to moving traffic, it won’t be long before someone is killed.

“That is my opinion, there will be serious injuries or possible fatalities.”

He added: “If something comes through the windscreen and hits the driver, God knows what injuries it would cause to the driver

“But if that driver was to lose control of a moving vehicle especially on that stretch of road where it is a 50mph speed limit, the consequences could be absolutely disastrous.”

His comments come after The Evening Times published a story last week which revealed passengers on a bus from Glasgow to Cumbernauld had a lucky escape after a group of youths threw rocks at passing vehicles.

The Stagecoach X28 service was travelling along the M80 to Cumbernauld on Thursday, June 22, when the driver was forced to swerve to avoid the sudden onslaught of rocks being thrown at the bus and other vehicles on the stretch of motorway.

The windscreen on the bus was smashed and at least two other vehicles travelling in front of the bus were also hit, forcing them to stop on the hard shoulder.

Tom, who did not report the attack on his bus to the police, contacted The Evening Times to raise awareness of the issue and to urge vandals to think before they act.

He said: “We didn’t report the attack because we thought what could be done? Those responsible will be long gone.

“We understand that there is no way police could stand guard at that bridge 24/7 and sometimes you think it is a one off incident.”

He added: “What happened to our vehicle and what happened to the other bus shows that this how certain people in that area are getting their kicks.

“Moving vehicles should not be targeted, it is too dangerous.”
