HUNDREDS of residents in the Govan area have been hit by power cuts caused by a fire at an electricity distribution box.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said an electrical junction box went on fire and one appliance was sent to the scene.

Some residents in a nearby block of flats are said to have been evacuated as a precaution.

Scottish Power said they were alerted at 6.30pm and that power supplies were restored to the majority of customers in the G51 and G52 postcode areas within 45 minutes.

A spokeswoman said around 100 residents are still affected and engineers were working to restore power by 3.30am.

She apologised to customers affected and said the cause of the fire was under investigation.

One Twitter user posted a video of black smoke billowing out into the sky.

Another user present at the scene posted an image of firefighters working to bring the flames down.

A spokesman for Scottish Power said to customers: "Your power loss has been caused by damaged equipment at the Linthouse Substation on Napier Drive.

"Our emergency response team has attended the site and managed to restore supply to a number of properties.

"At this time, emergency services are securing the area to allow safe working for our emergency response team and, once we have the go-ahead, we will work to restore supplies as soon as possible.

"We expect to have your supplies restored by 3.30am.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience."
