Everyone is still talking about Kodi and whether the free media player is legal to use or not - well, it is.

The cloud of doubt that continues to hang over the popular streaming platform is due to third party add-ons that can be enabled which may be breaching copyright laws.

Glasgow Times:

Not all third party add-ons are illegal or contain links to infringing content, most give the user a wider choice of media to choose from.

But be warned - some of the most popular sources fall into that grey area between legal and illegal.

In the latest version of Kodi, Krpyton 17.4, there is an 'enable unknown sources' option which you will see if you're trying to install a new add-on - legal or otherwise.

The Kodi team are trying to distance themselsves and their product from piracy and added this extra step to ensure users are taking responsibility for their actions.

This extra step involves acknowledging that these add-ons are from 'unknown' sources.

There are a lot of legitimate Kodi add-ons from 'unknown' sources to choose from, but you should always know what you are installing.

Glasgow Times:

If you want to enable the unknown sources Kodi option, follow our quick guide below.

1. From the main menu of Kodi 17 Krypton, click on the Settings shortcut.

2. Click on System Settings

3. Click on Add-ons

4. Highlight Turn on Unknown Sources and toggle it to ON.

Glasgow Times:

5. You will see the following message: “Add-ons will be given access to personal data stored on this device. By allowing, you agree that you are solely responsible for any loss of data, unwanted behaviour, or damage to your device. Proceed?" - Click Yes.

Glasgow Times:

Now you can install Kodi add-ons as you normally would.
